Snowflake Extends AI Coding Across Data Platforms

Snowflake Inc. has expanded Cortex Code CLI to support external data engineering tools, including dbt and Apache Airflow. With this update, the AI-powered coding assistant moves beyond Snowflake-native workflows and now works across broader data environments.

As modern data stacks grow increasingly complex, teams often manage pipelines across multiple platforms. Consequently, troubleshooting, maintaining, and optimizing workflows can slow innovation. This expansion helps developers simplify those processes by delivering secure, context-aware AI assistance directly within the tools they already use.

AI-Powered Support for dbt and Apache Airflow

By integrating with dbt and Apache Airflow, Cortex Code CLI helps teams accelerate model development, streamline debugging, and optimize orchestration workflows. Instead of switching between disconnected systems, developers can now work more efficiently within a unified AI-assisted environment.

According to Snowflake’s product leadership, developers rarely operate in a single ecosystem. Therefore, AI coding tools must function seamlessly across platforms. This broader compatibility reflects Snowflake’s strategy to support enterprise-grade AI development wherever data resides.

In addition, the update introduces expanded AI model options. Customers can choose advanced models such as Claude Opus 4.6 and OpenAI GPT-5.2 to balance performance, latency, and cost. At the same time, new administrative controls enhance governance by enabling organizations to manage usage policies and access permissions more effectively.

Standalone Subscription Increases Accessibility

To lower barriers to entry, Snowflake also introduced a standalone subscription plan for Cortex Code CLI. Unlike traditional usage models, this plan operates independently of Snowflake compute requirements. As a result, development teams can begin leveraging AI-assisted coding without an existing Snowflake deployment.

Since its launch in late 2025, adoption has steadily increased, with thousands of developers embracing the tool to accelerate workflows and reduce manual coding tasks. Ultimately, this expansion strengthens Snowflake’s position in AI-powered data engineering and enables faster, more reliable production pipelines across modern data systems.
