The Tooth Fairy gives kids a raise in 2026, according to the latest findings from the Delta Dental Plans Association Original Tooth Fairy Poll®. The average value of a lost tooth increased 17% over the past year, rising from $5.01 to $5.84.
This marks the first year-over-year increase since 2023. As a result, the two-year decline in Tooth Fairy payouts has officially ended.
First Tooth Worth Even More
Importantly, the value of a first lost tooth is significantly higher. On average, children now receive $7.17 for their first tooth. That figure represents a 23% increase over the overall average and is up from $6.24 in 2025.
Moreover, 38% of parents say the Tooth Fairy leaves extra money for a child’s first tooth. Therefore, the first visit from the Tooth Fairy remains a special milestone for many families.
Rise in Non-Cash Tooth Fairy Gifts
In addition to cash, more children are receiving physical gifts. Nearly 32% of kids received a non-monetary present this year. That number is up from 19% in 2025.
Consequently, the Tooth Fairy tradition is evolving beyond simple cash rewards. Parents are increasingly choosing creative gifts to celebrate healthy smiles.
Long-Term Growth in Tooth Fairy Giving
Since the poll began in 1998, Tooth Fairy payouts have risen dramatically. The average cash gift has increased 349%, from $1.30 to $5.84 per tooth.
According to Gabriella Ferroni, Senior Director of Strategic Communications at Delta Dental Plans Association, the tradition helps promote oral health awareness. She noted that after a few cautious years, the Tooth Fairy decided it was time for a raise. Furthermore, the poll has tracked trends for 28 years to encourage children to care for their teeth.
Regional Differences Across the U.S.
Tooth Fairy payouts vary across regions. However, all major regions reported increases this year.
-
Northeast ($6.45): Led the nation with a 41% year-over-year jump.
-
West ($5.99): Remained in second place with a 5% increase.
-
South ($5.89): Fell from the top spot despite a 3% rise.
-
Midwest ($5.27): Posted the largest gain at 52%, narrowing the national gap.
Therefore, regional trends show strong growth across most parts of the country.
Tooth Fairy and the Economy
Historically, the Original Tooth Fairy Poll® has mirrored movements in the S&P 500. In recent years, however, the trend diverged.
For the first time since 2022, the poll has realigned with market performance. Over the past year, the average Tooth Fairy payout increased 17%. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 rose 16% during the same period. In January 2025, the index averaged 5,960. By January 2026, it climbed to 6,941.
As a result, the value of a lost tooth once again reflects broader economic trends.
