Global Recognition for Women Advancing Sustainable Energy
The 2026 OWSD-Elsevier Award recognizes five outstanding women scientists from the global South for advancing affordable, reliable, and clean energy solutions. Presented by the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World and the Elsevier Foundation, the award celebrates early-career researchers contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7).
Announced ahead of International Women’s Day on 8 March, this year’s honor highlights scientific innovation that improves community access to sustainable energy while strengthening leadership, mentorship, and inclusion in STEM fields.
2026 Award Winners Driving Impact
The five recipients include:
-
Cristina Dominguez (Guatemala) – Engineering sciences
-
Fadia Alhaj Hussien (Syria) – Chemical sciences
-
Duleeka Sandamali Gunarathne (Sri Lanka) – Engineering sciences
-
Tabitha Awuor Amollo (Kenya) – Physics
-
Victoire Ghafi Kondi Akara (Togo) – Physics
Together, these scientists demonstrate how collaboration and innovation accelerate clean energy transformation in developing regions.
Research Advancing Clean and Affordable Energy
Cristina Dominguez pioneers geospatial modelling tools that forecast rural electricity demand across Latin America. Fadia Alhaj Hussien transforms steel industry waste into catalysts for clean hydrogen and biofuel production, promoting green chemistry solutions.
In Sri Lanka, Duleeka Sandamali Gunarathne advances biomass thermochemical conversion technologies to strengthen bioenergy systems. Tabitha Awuor Amollo develops cost-effective solar cells and solar-powered refrigeration systems for rural health centers in Kenya. Meanwhile, Victoire Ghafi Kondi Akara leads electricity-demand modelling and renewable integration initiatives supporting African energy policies.
Their combined efforts highlight how women scientists are accelerating the global transition toward sustainable energy systems.
Supporting Women Leaders in Science
Since 2013, this joint initiative has recognized 84 women scientists from over 38 countries across the global South. Each recipient receives USD $5,000 and a travel grant to attend a leading international conference, fostering professional growth and collaboration.
Past honorees have earned global recognition and additional distinctions such as the L’OREAL-UNESCO For Women in Science fellowships.
By celebrating scientific excellence and community impact, the 2026 edition of the award reinforces the vital role of women researchers in shaping a more inclusive and resilient energy future.
